Teacher: Alright boys and girls, today were going to read a story called The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza. And were going to read this story today because in this special classroom of yours were going to set up a pizza restaurant.
Teacher: When she got home the little red hen put on her apron and stuck her head out the window. Good afternoon, she said. Can you help me make a pizza? Quack, not I, said the duck. Woof, not I, said the dog. Meow, not I, said the cat. Very well then, Ill make it myself, said the little red hen.
Teacher: So today, boys and girls, were going to have a pizza drama center set up in your classroom. In the pizza drama center were going to have pretend pizzas, were going to have order forms that well fill out, menus to read. Were going to have people being customers, were going to have people being a chef, making the pizza, and were going to have somebody being a waiter. And we re going to have a whole lot of fun doing some talking and using our words in that drama center.
Teacher: [Student s Name], do you remember that story we just read about The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza.
Student: Yeah.
Teacher: You are going to be kind of like the little red hen in that story, because you re going to be the one who makes the pizza. Youre the chef. The chef is the person who waits for the order form to come in from the server. The server is going to bring this to you after the customers make a decision about what kind of pizza they want. And so whats going to happen is, when he brings this youll have to look at the order form and decide whether you re going to do a big pizza or a little pizza. And the one with the check mark will tell you whether you have to make a big pizza or a little pizza. When youve decided what size, youll match whatever they want whatever toppings they want, theyll tell you. There will be a check mark in the square beside each of the toppings that they want. If they want green peppers, then youll need to put green peppers on your pizza. If they want mushrooms, youll need to put mushrooms on the pizza.
Teacher: [Student s Name], today youre going to be the server, that s why you re wearing this nice server apron. Your job as the server is to greet the customers who are coming in to the restaurant, and then you could say things like, Let me take you to your table. Youll take the customers to their table, to the place where they re going to sit. And your next job is to give them these: this is a menu. It s a pizza menu. Have you ever been to a restaurant?
Student: No.
Teacher: No? Well at a restaurant, what happens is the customers get a menu. Here, you re going to give each person, each customer, a menu, so they can read it, and they can decide what kind of pizza they want, what size they want it to be, and what toppings they want. So you re going to ask them, do you like a big pizza or a
...
Student: Small pizza.
Teacher: Yes! That will be your first question. And what do you think you might ask here, this is tomato sauce, what could you ask?
Student: Do you want tomato sauce?
Teacher: Yes! When youve taken your order, then what you re going to do is take this over to the chef, and he s going to read it, and make the pizza that your customers ordered.
Teacher: Boys and girls, have you ever been to a restaurant before?
Student: Yes.
Student: No.
Teacher: Yes? Okay. Have you ever been to a restaurant where you have to sit down at the table, and then somebody comes and asks you what you want to eat?
Student: Yes.
Teacher: Today, you guys are going to be customers. Do you know what customers are?
Students: Yes.
Teacher: What are customers?
Student: People that sit down and then the cook comes and asks them what you want, and then you sit down and then you wait for the cook to bring your food.
Teacher: There you go. You re going to come in through the door, the server is going to welcome you, and he s going to show you to your chairs, to your table and your chairs. And then what s going to happen, is the server is going to give you each a menu. Okay, a menu. Do you guys know what a menu is?
Student: Yes. It s something that you check and then you tell them what you want on the menu.
Teacher: A menu is something that you read, and look at, because there s sometimes pictures to help you decide, mmm, does this look yummy or not yummy, and you decide what it is you want. So when you re reading the menu together
...
So you have to decide on one pizza together. You have to decide, are you really hungry, do you want a big
pizza, a really big one, or are you just a little bit hungry, and you ll share a little pizza. And then, when the pizza comes and the server gives you your pizza slices, what are some of the things we might say about pizza when we re eating it?
Student: Thank you for this pizza.
Teacher: Thank you for this pizza, that would be a very polite thing to say. So do you guys feel ready to be customers?
Student: Yeah.
Teacher: Okay, well I think we re ready to have our pizza restaurant.
Student: Come on in.
Teacher: [Student s Name]?
Student: Yeah?
Teacher: The first thing you need to do is hand out the menus.
Student: Okay guys, what do you want?
Teacher: So ask each question sweetie.
Student: Do you want tomato sauce?
Student: Yeah.
Student: Cheese, pepperoni and mushroom.
Student: Cheese, pepperoni and mushroom?
Student: Later on cheese, pepperoni, mushroom, and
...
pepperoni.
Student: Pepperoni.
Student: Mushrooms.
Student: Mushrooms.
Student: And green pepper.
Student: Green pepper.
Student: And tomato sauce.
Student: Tomato sauce.
Teacher: Time to take the pizza out! It s ready. Now you, give it to the server, who s going to take it to the customers.
Student: I like eating a pizza.
Teacher: So boys and girls, I think you ve figured out what it s like to be at pizza restaurant!
