Just flip it over, and the first section is our vocabulary section. The first part says: "I think these words will be in the story." [Students Name], what do you think? Which word?
Student: Behave.
Teacher: Behave. Now our vocabulary words that we had. It says: "I will look for these words in the story." We have "squirmed", I want you to say after me. When I say, you say. Squirmed.
Students: Squirmed.
Teacher: Arithmetic.
Students: Arithmetic.
Teacher: We made our predictions also. Raise your hand and tell me what you think this story is about. [Students Name], what do you think this story is about?
Student: Ms. Nelson was trying to scare her kids...
Teacher: Now, weve read the story Ms. Nelson is Missing. Were going to flip again as if were flipping a page and go to the next page. It says: "Understanding", and you have to complete the sentence. It says: "In the story, I noticed". You can use your stories. Go back through the story and pick out one thing that you noticed in this story... [Students Name], what did you notice in the story?
Student: I know that a girl was upside-down.
Teacher: You noticed that a girl was upside-down... And when you flip youre going to be on the "Interpretations" part, and it says: "I wonder". I wonder what would have happened if a Mr. Swamp showed up, rather than a Ms. Swamp. You think about "what do you wonder?" Do I have any volunteers for this next part to tell me what they wonder about the story? [Students Name].
Student: I wonder if Ms. Nelson has a twin sister.
Teacher: You wonder if she has a twin sister. Okay. Were going to move on to the next section which says: "Connections". Raise your hand and tell me what you connected this story to. [Students Name].
Student: When I hit my twin sister, she didnt talk to me for a month.
Teacher: Okay. She said, you said you hit your twin sister? And she said her twin sister didnt talk to her for a month. Were going to move on to the re-telling part. It says: "Tell what happened in the story." In about two or three sentences I want you to write what happened in the story. Think about the beginning of the story, the middle, and the end. After you write your sentences, on the illustration part it says: "Draw your favorite part of the story." So you can just draw a simple picture to illustrate your favorite part of the story. Were going to extend the illustration by doing writing, and youre going to make a person... Up here we have what you all made. I have Ms. Viola Swamp right here, with the character description on the inside, and you all did a wonderful job on creating these characters from the story. Since you have been such a good class today, tomorrow we will make Ms. [Teachers Name]s swamp surprise.
