Teacher: Whats this sound? Teacher and Students: /m/ Teacher: This sound is? Students: /op/! Teacher: /op/, very good. Lets put it together. Teacher and Students: Mop! Teacher: If you believe mop is a word, raise your thumb. Teacher: Very good, mop is a word. Thank you. Teacher: Lets say this sound. Teacher and Students: /t/ Teacher: Lets say this sound! Teacher and students: /at/ Teacher: Lets put it together. Teacher and Students: Tat. Teacher: Tat. Is tat a word? Students: No. Teacher: No. Lets try another one. Lets see. Activity Objective
The goal of Make a Word: Using Onsets and Rimes is teach students to blend different initial consonants with selected rimes (spelling patterns), in this case -op and -at to see what words they can make.

Additional Comments:
- Activities such as this that involve some children holding letters or word parts, and the remainder of the class blending the word parts, engages all of the students because they all have a role to play. - This activity can begin with simple onsets and rimes, but as the students learn more complex onsets and more difficult rimes, they can be given increasingly more challenging word parts to blend.
