Because I teach the English as a second language for the older students, what I find extremely important is to treat them like the young adult that they are. So when I'm talking to them, I don't down the language or use tones that I would use with younger grades. I find that when I do that, the confidence boosts right away.
It's extremely intimidating coming to a new country or a new school, a new grade level that I want them to know that I am here 100 percent for their support. So when I find a relation with them, based on their age levels I find that it definitely goes a long way. Especially for their motivation, their wanting to participate and of course I see them about 3 or 4 times a week and that's individual classes. They're with me for that entire 50 minute period where we do different activities for English acquisition and English language learning. I want them to be excited about coming down; I want them to wonder: Oh, what is she going to do this time with us? What kind of activities is she going to bring? What is she going to introduce this time? Are we going to talk about another movie that we've all seen? That's what I want them to be thinking, you know when I call the classes and I say, "Can I have this class come down to me during this period? I want them to start asking and I want them to pick up their books right away and come see me.
