There are so many resources available to ESL teachers. Based on computer software there is a lot of programs for ESL instruction where students could work independently and so I don't need to be one-on-one with them all the time. This is a motivation factor and a confidence builder because they don't need their English as a second language teacher always hovering over them or pointing things out, they can work on these programs individually.
Just as much as these programs are valid and entertaining, for example for the ESL students, so are other more interactive programs like games, playing scrabble or cooking. Even if it is a book or a magazine that they want to bring to school from home that they're interested in, I find that I can use it in the classroom so fast that I don't have to stop there and think "Oh, how am I going to use that?", I just blend it into the lesson right away.
At times even if I have something planned before the ESL group comes down, I find that depending on what they'll bring into the classroom or depending on even just a question for example, they'll say "Oh did you see this movie?", I'll say "Oh I did see that movie", that will change my entire lesson for that period and I will focus on movies. Is it is easy to do? I find that it is easy to do because once you get that discussion going. There's no stopping them. They're motivated, they're encouraged and it's so positive for them.
