Reading disabilities are when children and adults struggle with learning to read, spell and write. Children struggle to learn to read and write for different reasons. For some children, it's that they haven't had adequate exposure, sometimes to instruction. For other children, they have underlying weaknesses in some of the processes important to reading. So despite having, perhaps good intelligence and good oral language, they have difficulty in an area of language processing known as phonological awareness, and this makes it difficult for them to learn to read and write.
