It's important that instruction for struggling readers includes instruction in letter sound correspondences, also known as phonics. We now know that there's a very, very strong research base indicating that, especially for children who are struggling to learn to read and write in English, that phonics is a fundamental part of the instruction that they need. English is an alphabetic language, and in an alphabetic language their speech sounds correspond with an alphabetic writing system. And so if this relationship between our speech and the letter sounds isn't made explicit to children it makes it a lot more difficult for them to crack the code.
