Pac Mangles
Integrating Mathematics and Literacy (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
Now these are our Pac mangles, which is another opportunity for a class to integrate math, and art, and language together. Basically the students created their own Pac man, and their mouths are representing a different type of angle: acute, obtuse, or right angle. After they've created their art, they then have to explain what the angle is that they made with their mouth. And for example if it's an acute angle, I know it's an acute angle because it's less than 90 degrees. They have to do a little write up that goes along with it, explaining it.
We find these art slash math slash language lessons can be very helpful for when the students are working on something if they need a cuing system to remind them, what's an obtuse angle, they can look up here, and it sort of jogs their memory to get it back to the math thinking.
Activity Objective
The goal of Pac Mangles: Integrating Mathematics and Literacy (Virtual Tour) is to promote the enjoyment of writing by integrating literacy with mathematics and to provide opportunities for exposure to and use of math terminology by writing explanations.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- Encourage students to use new vocabulary, including angles, acute, obtuse and right, when they write their explanations.
- Integrated instruction is a teaching approach that connects different subjects according to a selected theme or topic.
- Integrating literacy with other curriculum areas encourages self-expression, is motivating and engaging and involves thinking critically.
- Use Pac Mangles as a reference tool and encourage students to refer to them during related tasks and activities.
