This is our vocabulary vine and the words that we choose from our vocabulary vine actually come from our reading basal, and we introduce anywhere from two to three words per week. As I introduce the word we actually attack the word, we broke it down. So it's not just a word that I said "this is the word prairie". We would have the synonym for prairie, we would have the antonym for prairie, we would decide what part of speech prairie was. So, it would help them understand truly what the word meant.
And I didn't want to just put them on the wall just as another word wall because we already have so many of those. I wanted something that they could actually interact with, and as they're writing I can see them just go across the vocabulary words, which is just great, which what I actually want them to do. With the vocabulary vine it was something interesting for them to look at.
When they actually post the letters, because I would let them help me write the letters on the leaves, and they would decide where they went because we discussed whether or not we wanted them to go in alphabetic order or how we wanted them to go. And they were just "no, we're just going to stick them this way and this way".
And some kids enjoyed certain words so they wanted them close to their seat. So I think that with the vine it was a very creative way to say vocabulary and they were actually able to interact with that word. And I mean now, even in their speech, another student from across the room will raise their hand and say "that's on the vocabulary vine". And I'll be like "it sure is". So, it's not just something that they just go and they leave, but with it being posted and with it being posted in such a creative way it's something that they actually like to refer back to.
