Our unit in social studies was actually North and South America. So we did some reading on North and South America, they found out a lot of interesting things. I had them do a rhyming prompt on North and South America. And the prompt that I used for that is, you could take a trip to either North or South America, which one would you go to and tell me why. Now, in order to do that they would have to have some background knowledge of either North or South America, so I said it was a free trip, I said all expenses paid, you're just going to go there to relax and enjoy yourself. But you can only choose one of the two.
So, it started off as a persuasive writing, why do you think I should allow you to go to North America, rather than South America, but their writing kind of led me to something else because in there they came out with so many details of each one, so I just had them do just the report on either North or South America. And what we have here, which are the character cashes.
We talked about natural resources, we talked about money, we talked about all of those things in social studies, and when they did the character cashes that was actually from a character of a previous book that they had read. But we were able to tie it in to the social studies because we had been talking about expenses and the way money is made. And about that time we were talking about cash crops, so a lot of different things kind of tied in together. So we were actually able to integrate some social studies with literature there.
