Were going to work on three letter words, okay? Im going to blend some sounds together, and I want you to help me figure out what it is Im thinking about, okay? Teacher: Im only using how many letters? Students: Three! Teacher: And I am going to blend them to what? Students: Together! Teacher: And Im going to make how many words? Students: One. Teacher: One word. Are you ready? Student: Yes, Im ready. Teacher: Im thinking of a word its an animal. If you know the name of this animal, I want you to raise your hand, okay? Im going to put the sounds together for you, alright? Here you go. Teacher: /c/ /a/ /t/. [Students Name]. Student: Cat. Teacher: Cat. I put three sounds together, and I made cat. Let me hear you make cat. Teacher and Students: /c/ /a/ /t/ Teacher: Good job. Last one, okay? Student: Yes sir. Teacher: /b/ /i/ /g/ Student: Big! Teacher: Good job, good job, [Students Name].

Activity Objective
The goal of Blending Mystery Words: Practicing Blending Sounds is for students to blend a series of speech sounds together and guess the word the teacher is thinking of. The teacher helps students access the sounds by using actions the students have learned to represent each speech sound (the students have been taught the actions as part of the Jolly Phonics program). The students watch and listen as the teacher acts out each sound and then they blend the sounds into a word they know.

Acting out the sounds is very engaging for the students and it helps them retain the sounds in memory and blend them together into words. The activity begins using short three-sound words but can be extended to include longer words with initial and final blends.
