Teacher: Okay, so I'm going to show you a really cool trick to make sounds change in a word. Okay? So we'll start with the word... can you read that word?
Student: /k/ /a/ /p/
Teacher: Cap. Okay, you got it exactly right. I'm going to show you, it's going to be a magic E. So I want you to put the magic E at the end of the word. Now, the /a/ is going to say its name instead, so it's going to say A. So it's going to say
Student and Teacher: Cape.
Teacher: Weird. Okay, let's get rid of the E. What's it say?
Student: Cap.
Teacher: Okay good. Let's put the E back on and see what it says.
Student: Cape.
Teacher: Cape. So it's kind of like these two connect and then that makes the magic. The magic E makes it say A. Okay, let's do another word.
Student: Mop.
Teacher: Mop. Okay, so put a magic E on there.
Student: Poof.
Teacher: Poof, now what does it say?
Student: Mobe.
Teacher: Mope. Oh, good.
Student: Mope.
Teacher: That was hard. Okay, I'll take off the E. What's it say?
Student: Mop.
Teacher: Good, now put a magic E right here.
Student: Poof.
Teacher: Poof.
Student: Mope.
Teacher: Mope. Amazing, wow you're a good magician. So this is my magic hat, and in here, there are some words that you're going to use your magic E to change to be the long sound. Okay? There's also a magic wand. If you use the magic wand, then it's going to let you make extra words that rhyme with any word that you have. Okay? If you get the thing that says poof, it says oh no, and then all your words are going to go back in the hat and disappear. Okay? Great. You ready?
Student: Dim.
Teacher: Dim. Okay, so you want to use your magic wand, magic E? Okay, or you can use a magic sticker. Which one do you want to do? Magic.
Student: Poof.
Teacher: Perfect. What's this new word going to say?
Student: Dimey.
Teacher: Close, okay. So when we have a magic E at the end, we don't say the E. We just change the /i/ to say its name.
Student: I.
Teacher: Yeah, so what will it say?
Student: Dime.
Teacher: Dime. Okay, really good. You can write down your magic word in your book.
Student: Mop.
Teacher: Mop, okay. Use your magic wand.
Student: Mope.
Teacher: Mope. You're really good at figuring out what it's going to say. Alright, ready to write mope? Good one, okay. So why did you have an E in mope?
Student: Or else it would just say mop.
Teacher: Yeah. Exactly, okay. Ready? Magic wand. Okay, so now you get to pick one and write some rhyming words. Which one do you want to do? Dime or mope?
Student: Mope.
Teacher: Mope. Okay, so I'll give you some words that rhyme with mope. Can you think of any words?
Student: Nope.
Teacher: Nope. Perfect. You can write the word nope. That was a funny joke. You got lots of funny jokes.
Student: Okay.
Teacher: Okay, what else can we think of that rhymes with mope?
Student: Hope.
Teacher: Hope. Oh, I never thought of that! Okay, I'll cover them both up so you can write the word hope. Good, and how did you know it needed the magic E?
Student: Because
Teacher: What would it say without the magic E?
Student: Hop.
Teacher: Hop. Really good! Okay, let's do one more. Can you think of one more that rhymes with nope, mope, and hope? Do you want a clue? I thought of one and it starts with /r/.
Student: Rope.
Teacher: Rope! Okay, you did so good with these magic words. What did you think of the game?
Student: I liked it.
