When we're introducing the various components of the Daily 5 program the first way we introduce them is with an I-Chart. I standing for independent, so students are taught that being independent means they're able to do something on their own. And we establish the why, the purpose, why are we doing this, why will we be spending so much time on Read to Self throughout the school year. And of course it's to become better readers, it's urgent to become a better reader and further develop our reading skills. So we lay it out in the framework of student and teacher, so the students know exactly what their jobs are and they know exactly what my job is. I have a job during Read to Self and that's to work with students, that's when I pull my group of students based on their strategies to work with, or I'm working one on one on students, if that's the need at that moment. If there's ever any glitches and the students aren't focused or they're not attending we refer back to the I-Chart regularly. We have the 10 steps to independence that's laid out very well in the Daily 5 book, and we follow those every time we introduce a new component to Daily 5. I've taken some pictures of the students, I take them the first few days when we're working on our stamina and we're all excited about becoming better at Read to Self, and again it provides them with some ownership and they like to see themselves up there as part of our classroom wall.
