The science unit we just completed the topic was simple machines and we integrated literacy quite well with all the non-fiction selections that the students were able to read provided they were good-fit books. But a lot of the selections actually are, and the boys came up here regularly during Read to Self or Read to Someone and chose these books so they could have an opportunity to learn more and they love the graphic element of non-fiction text. So this gives teachers an opportunity to teach what those elements are, what does non-fiction text have, how does it differ from fiction, and as well, the students then were able to write about an experiment we had done, and it was great because they pulled their new vocabulary from science, or expanded vocabulary became about this particular topic. We did a recount of an experiment, so they had to summarize, they had to write a recount, and they also had to incorporate new vocabulary, and they did it extremely well.
