Another component of the Daily 5 program that requires an I-Chart that outlines students' expected behaviors and what I'll be doing during that time is when we go to Word Work. Again, the purpose is established, why are we going, what do we do when we're there. But more specifically why, so they know it's because they need to learn how to spell new words and they need to learn how to expand their vocabulary, and this rotation gives them an opportunity to do that. The students' expectations for materials and behavior are outlined on one side, and again, this gives me the opportunity to work with students in small groups or one on one as needed. It is important at this particular rotation that they learn from the start that they're not working with friends during Word Work, or in fact the noise level could increase, that they are working independently, that they stay focused, and maintain the same materials, they stay in one spot, and if that's their choice, they'll stay there for the duration of that rotation. Again, it's worked extremely well. You do have to limit the amount of students that can go there. I allow four at a time, because we have found that our space in the classroom and the resources that we have available, that's the number that works the best.
