This is my class word wall. Its an alphabetic word wall. Every week I introduce five to seven words to the students and we work with these words quite intensely everyday throughout the week. We learn all of the different tips and tricks that good spellers use to spell words correctly; things like looking for the small word and the big word, counting the number of letters in the word, and for the kinesthetic learners, we clap the words by saying happy, H-A-P-P-Y, as were sitting at our desks or walking around the classroom.
At the end of the week, we do have a spelling test that we use to sort of graduate the words so that they take their place on the word wall. I'm very, very strict about the children from that point on, for the rest of the school year, spelling the words correctly in all of their writing. And if you notice, I have used words generated by frequently misspelled words for any particular grade. I also look at the children's writing and see what kind of words they're having difficulty with. I also put in content-related words, for example, math words.
