I think it's really important in your classroom to have a mix of books ready and available for the children to read during their independent reading time. And it's not just the different levels of books, but also, a real mix of fiction and non-fiction books. I find that boys, in particular, really like the non-fiction books in my classroom, books like the Guinness Book of World Records. I also have a big selection of books on particular non-fiction subjects, particularly Science. And even though a child may not be at the reading level that they could comprehend the text that's on these pages, they can really learn a lot about the world and about a subject they're interested by looking at these books.
