Where in the World
Extending Understanding of Mapping Skills (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
This is an extension activity to our classroom project where the children were required to choose a country and research it. I asked the children to find their country on a large map of the world. I asked the children to find the country, to make a name card, and to attach the card to the country on the map with a piece of string so that its easily seen. I also required the children to find their country on a globe, because often children will look at a map of the world, and think that the world is flat, and a consequence of that is that children often think that Australia is very far away from North America. Having the children do this activity on the globe will help them understand that the world is actually a sphere.
Activity Objective
The goal of Where in the World: Extending Understanding of Mapping Skills (Virtual Tour) is to extend students' understanding of geographical concepts by integrating literacy with social studies and to provide opportunities for exposure to and use of new vocabulary.
