I really believe in teaching practical skills to children, even young children. And this is a project where we create sock creatures. And as they create the sock creatures, they're learning how to use a sewing machine, how to hand-sew seams, and how to sew on buttons. This is very motivating for the children because they'll use this to write stories. Even the boys, who you might not think would be interested in, love this activity.
Once they've planned and created their creature, I will ask them to do a non-fiction procedural writing activity telling how to make a sock creature. I will then, later on, ask them to create narratives writing the adventures that their sock creature might go on. I'll also read aloud books. There are many books about sock creatures out there. One is called, The Sock Monkey and the Glass Doorknob, which really shows how a sock monkey can have an adventure. I also have some non-fiction books in the classroom that the children can enjoy. This ones about the history of sock monkeys. So I encourage you to do any kind of sewing with your children, because they will love it.
