We teach visualization as a comprehension strategy. At the end of that unit we start to discuss the size of different objects. Because it's often hard for students to understand the true size of different objects, like for example a certain type of specific spider, we might tell them to visualize that its the exact same size as a dinner plate, which is a common object. Because they understand the size of a dinner plate they can then understand how big that exact spider is. Another example is the heart, they might find it hard to understand exactly how big the heart is but they do know how big a fist is, so if we tell them to have a picture in their mind of a fist, they can then understand the true size of the heart.
