When I give the students a writing task I'll often stop them in between to conference with them and give them feedback on their work. So as opposed to giving them feedback when the project is already finished, I stop in the middle and explain to them how they can improve. So, on this little flap of paper is all the expectations that I had set out for them at the beginning of the project. They can see by the little icon of a star or the little icon of a wish if they've been successful on that part or at that expectation or if they need to work on that. As well, we put a little sticker at the top, for example, this says re-read your writing so it makes sense, and its on a fun colorful sticker so the students know that's they're first job when they get back to editing their work. The students really, really love the stickers because they're fun and it's very clear to them what they need to improve on, as opposed to just saying please go back to your desk and do the best you can, they know exactly what's expected of them.
