During our literacy block, I've organized the students using The Daily 5 Program. This means that while I'm doing my guided reading, the students are working on a variety of different activities within the choices of: Listen to Reading, Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, and Word Work. The students can use the list that is on the Reading Board to be able to check off different activities that they would like to do and they often come to the board to look to decide what they would like to do that day.
During Read to Self, one of the options that the students have is to go to highlights.com, which is a magazine that the students can look at online and read from.
Read to Someone has a great site called Storybird. There are all kinds of stories that are written by students that the students like to read to each other. They also can use Storybird when doing Work on Writing because they can publish their own writing on Storybird.
During Work on Writing, students like to write letters to me to request certain activities that they would like to do in the classroom. It's kind of like a persuasive letter as well as writing recounts to their parents about what they did that day.
During Word Work, students will practice the words that they've collected in their word collectors, in their own writing and play games such as Banana Scrabble or go to apps on the iPads such as Word Warp X to practice spelling general words.
