Activity Objective
The goal of Literacy in Science: Expanding Vocabulary in the Content Areas (Virtual Tour) is to support student comprehension during science lessons by drawing attention to, building understanding of, and encouraging the use of the appropriate terminology. In the context of learning science students develop and apply their literacy skills through vocabulary building, reading non-fiction texts, as well as conducting experiments and recording them using procedural writing.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- Add previously taught science-specific vocabulary to the class word wall in a different color so that students are able to identify and learn to spell science terminology, and to use it during independent and group work. - Encourage students to practice using science terminology in their speech and writing by keeping a tally chart of the number of times the words are used daily.
