Student Book Talks
Building Literacy Motivation and Deeper Understanding through Discussion (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
Book Talks is an activity where students have the opportunity to practice the skills that they have been learning about for reading strategies. We go through the purpose of what a Book Talk is for, the preparations they are going to have to take and then what content they need to include in their Book Talk. Students sign up then with a book they are interested in and they prepare a summary, talk about connections that they have made and the inferences of the authors message: all things that we have practiced together in our modeled read alouds.

Activity Objective
The goal of Student Book Talks: Building Literacy Motivation and Deeper Understanding through Discussion (Virtual Tour) is to inspire students passion for reading while developing their ability to analyze books and communicate about their plot, characters, setting and theme. Students regularly present summaries of books that they have read as well as inferences and connections they have made.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- Encourage students to rehearse their Book Talk so that their presentation is succinct and engaging. - A student-created rating system adds excitement to book recommendations. - To extend the writing task beyond making a summary, have students pretend they are a book reviewer from the local newspaper and do a critical analysis, rating the book on various characteristics.
