Creating a Classroom Library
Using the Hundreds Carpet to Organize Books (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
The bookshelf is organized into different genres of books as well as leveled books. The students were part of the process of organizing these books through a sorting activity. They worked in small groups to sort the books in a variety of different ways and graphed them on the hundreds carpet. We decided upon the genres for our bookshelf of fiction, non-fiction, graphic, magazines as well as poetry. This helped the students identify the text features that are involved in each of these genres so that they know where to put the books when they are putting them away on the shelf. The hundreds carpet can also be used in many different activities in language as well as math. You can use the hundreds chart to build word families, play Scrabble games, as well as math games that help to improve student vocabulary when learning about a new topic.

Activity Objective
The goal of Creating a Classroom Library: Using the Hundreds Carpet to Organize Books (Virtual Tour) is to teach students about different book genres. Students categorize sets of books in groups and determine, as a class, which genre labels are best for their classroom library. The hundreds carpet is also used for vocabulary building activities and games.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- After each group categorizes their set of books, have a discussion with your students about what indicators they used to categorize their books. Determine through discussion if any categories need to be separated or combined. - The hundreds carpet comes with over 100 different activities that involve numbers, words and shapes. It can be used to play word family games, discover connections between numbers, introduce graphing and explore symmetry through shapes.
