Art from The Heart
Integrating Literacy Instruction in Community-Building Art Projects (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
After reading a story about an individual who overcame physical challenges to achieve a goal the students came up with positive messages for inspiration in their own lives. They created shields for their mottos that they had created to display in our classroom as a positive message throughout the year. After reading the book Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun, another great activity for building community culture is Friend Venn diagrams. This is where students get into pairs and talk about their similarities and differences. During this activity we learned that although we may be different we are all the same on the inside.

Additional Comments:
- An extension would be to add dramatic role-playing and writing-in-role activities. Students can explore compassion and empathy by exploring the perspectives of each character in the book.
