Real World Class Jobs
Sharing Responsibility in the Classroom (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
These are our classroom jobs. In September, within the first week of school, the students and I collaborate on deciding what jobs would be helpful around the classroom. We come up with a list of jobs that we believe would keep the classroom organized and would be helpful for myself and for them. Once we come up with that list, the students then fill out job applications for each job. They list their past job experience, their qualifications, why they're interested in that job and then I review the applications. They're then hired for the position and every couple of weeks we do a job performance review in which they self-assess using a simple rubric. They're then paid for their job in points. So they are rewarded a couple of points if they're doing their job consistently and responsibly and if they believe they can improve, they come up with an improvement plan and then we check on them a couple weeks later and see how they're doing.

Activity Objective
The goal of Real World Class Jobs: Sharing Responsibility in the Classroom (Virtual Tour) is to have students participate in classroom jobs that build on their individual strengths and curiosity. The whole process is a collaboration between teacher and students. This teacher asks students to fill out a job application for something that they feel they would excel at or are interested in. The teacher reviews each application and once hired, students take part in a performance assessment approximately every 2 weeks to ensure they're doing their job consistently and responsibly.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- This can be adapted to younger students by eliminating the written component. Student jobs can be assigned at just about any grade and are a great way to help build community and accountability in the classroom. - Use your discretion to decide if your students should be paid for their efforts or not. Some students will be intrinsically motivated to contribute to the classroom jobs but others might benefit from some sort of reward, such as points for payment.
