Transcript

Behind me you can see our classroom language-learning wall. Some of the editing and revising symbols we use when giving feedback to students on their writing, as well as the paragraph writing anchor chart, and the co-constructed sample of a paragraph. Language is really infused into all the curriculum areas in my classroom. This wall may change time-to-time, depending on what were working on in class. The point of the language-learning wall is to support students in their reading and writing strategies. Examples of things that could go up on this board are revision checklists, success criteria for their writing, or student samples.

Activity Objective

The goal of Language-Learning Wall: Creating a Visual Aid Supporting Growth in Reading and Writing Strategies (Virtual Tour) is to provide students with definitions, success criteria and examples of when and how to apply various literacy learning skills and strategies. This teacher dedicates a section of wall in her classroom to whatever students are currently working on. Students can reference this wall for success criteria and to check their work with other students examples, which helps them be the best readers and writers that they can be.

Quick Tips

Additional Comments:

- Its important to co-construct this wall with students, not only to keep them engaged in the process, but to ensure a depth of understanding. They can refer to the wall, as needed throughout the day, to review what is expected of them for high-quality reading and writing.
- A language-learning wall is useful at any of the elementary grades to support students in understanding and implementing skills and strategies that are the focus of classroom instruction.
