This is our Global Partners learning wall. Global Partners is a program that was developed through New York City and it connects our classroom with several other classrooms around the world. It's an online exchange program where the students collaborate and share ideas.
This year's focus is urban sustainability and we're connected with cities such as Hong Kong, Mumbai, Berlin, and London. Each student has their own individual login for the Global Partners website and they post their projects, reflections, ideas, or questions online and students in the other cities also post and then they can communicate with each other about the projects that they're working on.
This year's curriculum is called Living Cities and focuses on urban sustainability. The students study things like vertical gardens, green spaces, and sustainable buildings.
The first thing we did was calculate our impact on the environment by taking a quiz. The students then brainstormed ways that they could reduce their impact on the environment. The students wrote letters and created advertisements to persuade their community to reduce their impact on the environment.
We then connected these ideas to global issues by talking about things like the Kyoto Protocol and the Copenhagen Accord. After that, the students then began to redesign their own school to make it more sustainable. They're creating 3-D models of their designs, they're presenting them to the class, and they're writing a 1-page explanation of how they redesigned the building.
