This is our classroom library. The books in the library are divided by genre and type of book. We have a classroom librarian; thats one of the class jobs. The librarian is responsible for keeping the library organized but also really loves reading. So thats one of the qualifications that he had written down on his job application and thats important to me because he can give recommendations to students about books that they might like to read.
I always ensure that the library has a variety of books in it. The students in the class at this age have a variety of interests; some of them want to read magazines, some of them want to read novels, but its important to always have a variety of books in the library.
On the top shelf, I always have a couple of bins of books that are related to a unit of study in the classroom. Right now were doing poetry, so Ive asked the librarian in our school to put together a collection of poetry books. This is important so that the students always have a lot of different reference books for the work that theyre doing in class. To make this work, I partner with the school librarian so shes the expert and she knows what we have in our school library. With the unit of study in science, I work with her to put together a collection of science books to keep in our classroom library. This is so students can read through the books at their disposal but also there for research and to help them with any of the assignments theyre doing in class.
