Ask students if they know the song “The Corner Grocery Store”
- Sing an example verse with students and help them practice the tune

-
The class will make up a silly rhyming verse about that item, using a rhyming word
- Give examples of rhyming words
- The student will place the item in the grocery basket
-
Conduct the activity
- If students are having trouble making up rhyming verses, give them some clues about a possible rhyming word
- Sing each verse as a class
- If desired, sing the entire song as you pull each item out of the basket!
Adaptations For
English Language Learners/ESL:
- Give students extra help with the song and explain any new vocabulary
- Use pictures or toys to represent foods to help teach vocabulary
LD/Reading & Writing Difficulties:
- Give students time to come up with rhyming words, even if they dont make sense for the verse
Cultural Appropriateness & Diversity:
- Don't assume that students are familiar with "Corner Grocery Store": make sure to teach it first!
- If possible, choose a variety of food items from different cultures (for example: "there was curry, curry, it was in a hurry", or "there was mango, mango, dancing to the tango")
