A really fun way to work on letter recognition is to play Bingo. You have one student, the caller, at the table, and they'll turn the cards over. They'll ask if anyone has an I, and each student at the table will take their counter and place if they have an I on their board. When they fill up their board they get to yell Bingo. A great extension to this activity is to instruct the caller to look at the card, and not show anyone else at the table, and then say the letter sound. So, for example, I've picked the card I, so I would hold the card facing me and say "/i/ this letter makes the sound /i/" and the rest of the group would have to find the letter that made that sound.
