One of the literacy centers that we like to do is working with how many beats we hear in words. We may start off the year working with just the names of the students in our class, passing a tambourine around the circle, tapping to make the sounds that we hear in everybody's name. This center would progress to working with baskets that are labelled one and two. Inside these little pockets are pictures of words. The students would be asked to pull out a picture, say the word, and count how many beats are in that word. So, for example, this picture is of a zebra. They would put the picture down, clap the beats, /ze/bra/ and place it in the appropriate basket. So for zebra they would place it in number two. Let's try another one, ear. So they would put the picture down and again clap out the beats they hear in that word, then they would choose what basket to place it in. The great thing about this center is that once they're finished their color, each of the colors has different objects in their basket. So once they're done they can pass along to somebody else in the group and work with different objects.
