Another literacy center that we like to have is one where the students are writing down familiar things. It's really great to use tools such as whiteboard markers and chalk. Students are really eager to use these and because they erase so easily they also are able to take more risks with their writing. We may start the year off with the students practicing letter formation and letters. As the year progresses we may have them printing their names, and this week we're having them print familiar sight words that we've been working with. Some students will take the word cards so they can take their whiteboard markers and write on their whiteboards. As an extension to this activity some students will even write sentences using their sight word within the sentence. Once the students have written down their sight word they can read it to themselves and then turn to a friend and read their sight word to a friend.
