One of the ways that I like to engage my students when they come in in the morning, to teach them word recognition, name recognition, and also to get them excited about the units that we're doing is I like to put riddles up on my SMART Board to have them sign in. And so what I do is, depending on the unit of study that I'm doing, I create picture clues and then I put some words up, some sentences in a riddle, and then I have their names. And as each student comes and arrives at the carpet, they find their name and they just touch the name and drag it over to the answer that they'd like to put. And then as a class we read the riddle together and we come up with the answer. And they really get excited every morning to hear what the answer would be.
One of the ways that I help students read the riddle in the morning is I start off very simply with familiar sight words that we've been learning as well as some vocabulary that we've introduced for the unit. As the unit progresses we add more and more vocabulary to the riddle and we also have younger students read with older students first to see if they can figure out the riddle together, and then if they're still having difficulty, I'll step in and help them stretch out the sounds of the new words.
