One way that I like to take attendance in the morning, to really engage the students and help them work on phonemic awareness, is I ask my special student to come up with a sound of the day. And the student will pick a sound and then reinforce it by holding the card that's associated with that sound. So for today, for example, if my special student picked the sound /s/, they could hold the S card. Then we would take attendance and read out children's names and they would change their name by omitting the first letter of their name and replacing it with the sound of the day. So, for example, if Elijah was reading his name, he would then say "Slijah", Keyana would say "Seyana", and so on. Bianca, "Sianca". And, of course, I would do it as well. "Mrs. Sendall". This gets the students very excited, and it's kind of a silly way to practice our phonemic awareness.
