Activity Description
Preparation:
1. Gather materials for students to use to create anchor charts.
Implementation:
- Discuss familiar reading comprehension strategies with the students

Introduce the idea of creating anchor charts
- Emphasize the importance of having references in the classroom, like anchor charts to support learning
- Introduce the Frayer Model

Explain how the main term is at the center of the poster and characteristics and definitions surround the central term
- Provide students with examples highlighting the Frayer Model
- Keep these examples posted as students create their own

Have the students decide on key comprehension strategies
- Keep track of the strategies by listing them on chart paper

Divide the students into groups
- You may have predetermined groups or have the students choose who they would like to work with
- Have each group choose the comprehension strategy
- Have students create anchor charts for each comprehension strategy
- Move around the room supporting students as they work
- Display anchor charts in the classroom
Adaptations For
English Language Learners/ESL:
- Display pictures or symbols beside each comprehension strategy
- Prior to the activity pre-teach or review new terms including the key comprehension strategies
LD/Reading & Writing Difficulties:
- Include many visual representations and examples
- Repeat instructions to each group as they begin to complete the chart

- Have a variety of texts to demonstrate the selected comprehension strategies
