Math Minds
Communicating About Math Through Problem-Solving Tasks (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
Our math program is really built around problem solving and understanding key concepts in math. One of those concepts is communication. The math board behind me is a representation of how we communicate in math and in this particular example, we're using tables. The students were given a problem, it's a growing geometric pattern and they had to investigate the pattern and understand the mathematics of the pattern. But one of the most important aspects of the problem solving was, how do we communicate our answer? And in this particular example, we're using tables to communicate and we're looking at not only comparing rows and columns of the tables, but adding a columns for expression, understanding the terminology so that students start to see the connection between language and math, and that math has a language, and that if we understand how to communicate to each other that mathematical language that it enhances learning and ultimately builds our understanding.
Activity Objective
The goal of Math Minds: Communicating About Math Through Problem-Solving Tasks (Virtual Tour) is to help students develop an understanding of a variety of math concepts through problem solving tasks.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- Have students share their strategies for solving math problems with their peers.
- Show students that there can often be more than one way to solve a problem by displaying a variety of strategies on a math resource board.
