The Active Response Device is an excellent device to assess for learning. In this example, students were asked to compare two passenger tickets from the Titanic voyage. The goal of this was to determine what each student could infer from each ticket about the passenger. Who was the passenger? What class were they traveling in? And they had to look at components of their name and the ticket to make that inference. Once students made their inference they sent in their reference on the response system and we were able to determine our inference skills as a group and as individuals, based on the responses that were sent in.
As a teacher, it's very valuable to be able to see that instantly and determine a course of action. Where are we going to go with this lesson? Do they have the skills that we're looking for or are we going to take some steps back and revisit some of the previous concepts?
