Looking into the Past
Integrating History and Literacy (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
The social studies board behind me reflects the culminating task that students do to show their learning in social studies. Our social studies and language are always linked in that whatever we're working on with our language skills, we want to see it reflected in our social studies task. So for example, in this task we were really trying to understand critical understanding and analysis of research. Students were asked at the end of their social studies unit to choose one of the expectations from the curriculum that really struck a chord with them, focus on it, show their learning of it, and show that in a critical way. So rather than just research information and then rewrite that information in their own words, students were asked to research the information and make a statement about the information that they researched, or make a comparison or analyze that. And then they were given choice of how they wanted to present that; the only restriction was it had to fit into the space that was provided for them.
Activity Objective
The goal of Looking into the Past: Integrating History and Literacy (Virtual Tour) is to help students develop their writing and presentation skills by sharing information on ancient civilizations.
Quick Tips
