Learning Targets
Fostering Student Success in Kindergarten (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
Within the school districts we have different learning targets that teachers incorporate in their classroom to give meaning to why were learning that particular task. For example, when I'm reading with students at the reading center our learning target here is I'm learning what to do when I'm stuck on a word so that the story makes sense. And that will be followed by the success criteria which breaks down for the student with lots of visuals and what they need to do in order to be successful. So if I'm stuck on a word, I can look at the picture, I can get my mouth ready to make the sound, I can stretch out the letters, and I can skip the word and come back to it after. And throughout my classroom I'll have different learning targets displayed that will incorporate different parts of the curriculum, from numeracy, literacy, science, and I'll even have one for behavior management.

Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- Include the success criteria as part of the learning target. This will help students understand what they need to do in order to be successful.
- When listing learning targets and success criteria include pictures to ensure understanding by all students.
- Display different learning targets around the classroom as reference points for students.
- A learning target is the specific curriculum expectation rephrased in student-friendly language. When creating learning targets with your students clearly explain what and why they are learning it. Make it visible throughout their learning by displaying it on the board using bright colors.
