Throughout our unit called Healthy Me we've been learning about what we need to do in order to keep healthy. We've been talking about the food groups, we've been talking about what the heart needs to do in order to keep healthy, and we've been doing lots of hands on activity with the students on a daily basis, introducing them to healthy food choices. We even had parents come in to be part of our conclusion. And what they did is, as you see over here, we had the silhouettes of the students drawn, we had the students decorate them with different textures, colors, and elements, we had the students do a writing piece about what they need to do in order to keep healthy. This particular student wrote "I keep my heart healthy by running, jumping, and jogging." We had them also design a healthy meal, where they got to cut out pictures from newspaper clippings and design a meal that would meet their tastes. Throughout this unit I was able to tie in the different curriculum areas, language and literacy, we were able to build on vocabulary relating to healthy me, science, in terms of identifying the food groups, and also physical activity and what the heart does in order to keep healthy.
