So, very often during a language block when I'm introducing a new unit or when I want to promote sight words that I've introduced to the class, I'll go online, I'll find a book, I'll pull it up on the SMART Board, and together as a class we will read the story. I'll get students to come on up and point to the words, we'll point to the letters, we'll point to the sounds. The visuals here are great for the students, the students will come on up with their special fruit pointer and I may call out a word like cherries, and the picture is to help them figure out that cherries is there, they would come up and underline the word. So, I may ask the students to come on up and find the sight word. So, if we're looking for the word like, they would come on up, they would use one of the special SMART Board pens and they would look for the word and circle it.
Another way for them to be engaged and to be involved in this shared reading, they may come up with a special fruit pointer and point to the word, and then I would practice this over and over and print the booklets for them and have the students pair up with the neighbor or a partner and read to each other and then listen to their partner read. And this book is available to anyone, it's free and you can visit the website www.dltk-teach.com. It also gave me permission to print the book, so the students were able to read the stories to one another and then take it home and read it to a family member.
