Document Camera for Shared Reading
Supporting the Development of Decoding and Fluency (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
This piece of technology allows you to have big books, which are wonderful in the First Grade. Every time, every book that you want to use and read becomes a big book. Every time I'm going to do a read aloud, I like to use a document camera. The reason for this is that if you sit at the front of the class the students are listening of course, but they are not able to read, to see the printing and the words. This is an opportunity for them to have a read aloud and at the same time, follow the reading with my fingers. This is the cover of this book for example, and then I introduce the book, and then I just flip the page. Then, here I will start my read aloud. So I point at the words as I'm reading them and everybody can follow the read aloud. They can see the pictures in big. It's a really nice tool to support their reading development because they get to recognize the letters put together with the sounds that they make. Other uses for this tool, the document camera, are when you want to show something to the whole class. Almost every time I'm introducing a new strategy in the CAFE manual, I'm using the document camera as well because it allows them to see what I'm talking about. Even the card is now big, everybody can see it, can read it, and then when I'm practicing, for example, checking for understanding. I'm reading a book and then I stop the book and then ask questions, so they would read it with me. I was pointing at the words and they were all reading. It wasn't just me reading and they're listening. They're actually reading with me. Then they all discuss if they understood the book. When we're doing fluency for example, we read the text, we read it once and then we read it again. Sometimes it's one page or a poem, and then we read it, and then we read it again, and then we read it a third time. We're all reading it at the same time. They get so excited when they realize that they can. Every time they do it they get more fluent. What I like about this document camera is how easy it is to use. Sometimes my students tell me, "oh no, let's use the document camera, we want to see it". Because sometimes I might forget, so I just bring the cart, plug it in, press a button and it's on.

Activity Objective
The goal of Document Camera for Shared Reading: Supporting the Development of Decoding and Fluency (Virtual Tour) is to use technology that allows the class to follow along during read alouds. A document camera enlarges the pages, which allows the teacher to point at the text as he reads to ensure his students can read together as a class.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- Keep students engaged by asking for volunteers to come to the projector and point to the text as they read. - Use the document camera to showcase student work. The student can read their work aloud while their classmates follow along.
