Good Fit Books in First Grade
Developing Skill and a Love for Reading through Appropriate Choices (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
One of the things that are important in First Grade is to create independence in your students. One of the things that I spend time on is talking about Good Fit Books. My students have to understand that they don't have to read every single book, that they're allowed to choose books that they want to read, and that they don't have to like every single book that they read. Here we have three elements that they will have to pay attention to. One is books that they are interested in. Another is books that are at their reading level and books that they can understand.
Activity Objective
The goal of Good Fit Books in First Grade: Developing Skill and a Love for Reading through Appropriate Choices (Virtual Tour) is to encourage students to select books that are of interest to them and are at the appropriate reading level. This teacher explains and posts a sign on the wall to remind student what to think about when selecting books so that they choose something they like but also can read and understand.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- Put your books low enough that students can access them independently. - Discuss with students how to put their books away to ensure that they stay organized for the next reader.
