Here's another section of books. These ones are Science and Non-Fiction books. This is a stand that I like to have because it's another spot in the classroom where my students can access books that I'd like them to read. These particular books, my students like to use when I'm taking attendance in the morning. They have some quiet time to read a book. In the lowest section I have Recent Read Alouds. That's where I put books that I read recently so I'd like my students to have access to those books for a period of time. It's just a nice way to have other options in the classroom for kids to access books.
Activity Objective
The goal of Cross-Curricular Classroom Library: Making Different Genres Accessible to Interest and Inspire Readers (Virtual Tour) is to support students growing interest in reading by giving them easy access to different genres. This teacher has set up a special bookstand, for use during certain times of the day, to encourage students to explore a variety of illustrated science and other non-fiction, as well as to allow them to revisit recent read-aloud books. Although some of these special books may be above many students independent reading levels, the illustrations can build knowledge and stimulate interest in reading.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- It's important to provide your students with a variety of texts at all ages. Themed bookstands work at every grade! - A variety of levels for each genre ensures all students have access to the information they need to learn. - It is important to distinguish between leveled books that are intended to build reading skill at this early stage and illustrated books that are intended to build knowledge and stimulate an interest in reading. Both types of books play an important role in students growth as readers and learners.
