In the first grade, one of the things that are very important is read alouds. That's an opportunity for students to get in touch with reading and stories, start to get those brains working, creating new endings, wondering why this is happening, and thinking about characters and settings, and all those things. It's very important to read books to them as often as you can. This could happen during your lessons; it could happen during time for read alouds. It's just the time to read a good book to them. One that I use for the unit that I'm working on right now, which is predictions, is Nick Bland. Nick Bland has a series of books like this, The Very Cranky Bear. I read part of it and then I stop, get my students to predict what might happen next, and then explain their predictions. Then I move on to The Very Itchy Bear, also by the same author. Once I read the second one, they start making connections to the first one and then they make predictions based on the other book. "If in the other book, this is what happened. Maybe in this book, something similar might happen". Then we have The Very Brave Bear, and The Very Hungry Bear. They love these books. They're really one of my favorite books to read to my students. Another book I use to finish my unit on predictions is Do Not Open. It's a very old book but really good. Kids really get into it and then they start creating the end for this story and explaining why. This book allows them to make inferences and make connections and think about what's going to happen with this book. It's fantastic. It's one of those books that you cannot put down if you were an adult. This is the one for those kids that I really use for predictions.
