Class Jobs in First Grade
Motivating Reading while Fostering a Sense of Responsibility (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
One of the things that is nice to have in the first grade also is to create a sense of responsibility and having a job. My students get to have a job that rotates every week. As you can see, I have different jobs: Lunch bin helpers, door holders (which are the line leaders), cleaning and chairs (those students pay attention to keeping the classroom neat and organized), and then attendance. They love to see how they rotate every week and then every Monday they come and see who has a new job. Also, it's an opportunity to read because here, it says cleaning and chair, so they know that's what it says there for some reason and they know, oh, thats me, I have to do cleaning and chairs this week or this week I'm doing attendance. They can see that there is an A and a T and think at this point they just can read the word. So I think it's another opportunity for them to get information by applying that reading skills that they are developing.
Activity Objective
The goal of Class Jobs in First Grade: Motivating Reading While Fostering a Sense of Responsibility (Virtual Tour) is to inspire students to read by assigning them class jobs. Students are excited to read their job of the week as it gives them a sense of responsibility when it comes to taking care of the classroom.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- As students improve their reading and writing skills, you can ask them to brainstorm class jobs and start writing them on their own. - It's important to change the class jobs often to ensure that students keep engaged and to make sure they get a turn doing all the jobs.
