Activity Description
Preparation:
1. Choose an autobiography-themed book
a. See Additional Links for some ideas
2. Gather chart paper and markers
3. Photocopy one graphic organizer per student
Implementation:
Session 1
1. Read your chosen book to the class
2. Use the book to guide discussion about important information to include in an autobiography
a. Record examples on chart paper
3. Group the important points into headings to use as an outline
a. For example: My Birth, My Family, My Hobbies, My Favorite Things
4. Distribute one graphic organizer to each student
5. Have students write the headings that they will include in their autobiographies into their graphic organizers
6. Invite students to begin filling in each section of their graphic organizer
Session 2:
1. Allow students to complete their graphic organizer
2. Support students as they use the information in their graphic organizers to complete written autobiographies
Adaptations For
English Language Learners/ESL:
- Encourage peer coaching with a student who speaks the same first language
- Allow photographs or illustrations to be accompanied by short sentences
LD/Reading & Writing Difficulties:
- Encourage brainstorming of ideas with a peer or the teacher
- Scaffold how to use the graphic organizer
- Chunk the writing task into smaller parts, such as by sub-topic
Cultural Appropriateness & Diversity:
- Encourage students to include ideas and information about their own traditions, cultures, and beliefs in their autobiographies
Differentiated Instruction:
- Adjust the sub-topics to suit the learner's interests
- Allow a combination of pictures and words

Activity Objective
The goal of All About Me Autobiography: Writing from Personal Experience is to help students understand the structure of an autobiography by creating a personal, written summary about themselves.
What You Need

Activity Extensions:
- Have students write an acrostic name poem using information from the autobiography
- Invite students to research and write the autobiography of an object

- Introduce the concept of writing a biography about an author being studied in class
Additional Comments:
- The graphic organizer provided is just one possibility. You may wish to create your own graphic organizer or develop a particular set of headings or questions that best suit your teaching goals.
- Students can be encouraged to interview a family member to gather additional information to include in the autobiography.
- Students may use a bag of their favorite items from home to stimulate ideas for writing.
- Feature the autobiography of the 'Student of the Week' on a bulletin board with accompanying photographs and illustrations.
- Include the student's autobiography in a folder of published writing.
- Display a collection of 'All About Me' themed-storybooks in the classroom.
