Author of the Month
Using an Author Study to Practice Data Management (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
This month we are featuring Phoebe Gilman as the children's author of the month. She writes fantastic stories like The Balloon Tree. One of the things we like to do in our classroom is to make a list of the titles of the books that we're reading. As we collect those titles, we wait 'til the end of the month where we can vote on our favorite storybook. And that's not all we do. We take a tally of the results and we graph them so we can see each month which title wins for the author of the month.

Activity Objective
The goal of Author of the Month: Using an Author Study to Practice Data Management (Virtual Tour) is to provide a meaningful context for making connections between reading and data management.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- Display a collection of books about tallying and graphing for independent reading purposes. This will help students become more familiar with organizing data.
- Color-code the bar graph to provide visual clues about the results of the tally.
Repeat this activity monthly for other author study units.
- Provide opportunities for students to complete tallies and graphs in cooperative groups.
